Highlights for Children
Highlights for Children now offers two different magzines, one for pre-school "High Five" and the original "Hightlights" for older children. This well loved educational magazine includes Hidden Pictures, stories, articles and tons of craft ideas for kids. Did you read Highlights as a child? I did!
-
Zoobooks
These are light-weight magazines but each is packed with information. The magazine usually focuses on one particular animal or species and gives you lots of details. For instance one issue taught us how to tell the difference between African and Asian elephants. These magazines offer you a nice "different" format to get your children interested in learning about science.
-
The Wall Street Journal
As a remnant from my pre-mom days, I receive The Wall Street Journal and simply can't give it up. I've often thought that it would make a great resource for other homeschoolers. The Wall Street Journal takes a conservative, though secular, editorial view and has expanded its coverage of non-finance news in recent years. I have been very pleased with the evolution. There is now a Saturday edition as well as the regular Monday through Friday releases. There are sections focusing on personal health and finances, sciene and medical news, technology and entreprenuership. To give you just an idea of why I find it useful, in a single day's edition I found a review of chemistry sets for kids (the $200 model will give you a near high school quality lab) and tips on which batteries will work best in different products (alkalines won't last long in digital cameras). There's even a weekly recipe section! Do keep in mind, this is a paper about money and people spending it so you may not care for some of the coverage. I find the in-depth articles about North Korean refugess, school choice, solutions to poverty and immigration to be worth the read though. Visit www.wsj.com to take a look at their free content to get an idea of what the paper has to offer.
