Star Wars V-wing fighter kit from LEGO
|

 The V-wing Fighter
My son just received this LEGO kit for his 6th birthday and really enjoyed putting it together and playing with the finished product. It wasn't too complicated, he was able to follow all of the directions himself. This was his first "kit" so he was very proud to have built it all on his own.

Snap Circuits Jr.

Several other moms have recommended this toy and my husband couldn't wait any longer to try one out. We were able to buy ours locally with a coupon, but if you don't have that option you can find it at Back to Basics. My son opened this on the morning of his birthday and immediately went to work. The instructions are both written and pictoral so my son was able to do many of the first projects by himself just following the pictures (similar to a LEGO kit). We talked about how circuits work and the difference between a parallel circuit and a continous one. The first song the sound box played was "Happy Birthday!" Lots of great fun was had. My husband is already looking foward to getting the larger 300 activity set next year.
Thomas the Tank Engine Play Tent
Click picture to buy
This is the Take Along Thomas set, not the wooden one. It's not as "classically" Thomas, but it is much more affordable. The trains that go along with this set are die cast and slightly smaller than the wooden Thomas trains. My son tells me that his wooden trains can run on this track, but I think they are a bit wide for it. So it is important to know which kind of set you are buying for before you purchase any trains. The benefit of this set is that a space under the lid holds the track pieces and there's room for several trains in the roundhouse itself. My children keep this affordable set at grandma's house while we have the wooden set here at home. They are crazy about Thomas! Be sure and check out the Thomas the Tank Engine play tent available at Back to Basics as well.
Cardboard Construction Blocks My children have a set of these blocks and they get a lot of use. The kids create walls to knock down and roadways for their cars. These are lightweight, but do take up some space. You'll need a little time to get this item put together- the blocks are shipped flat and you have to fold them into shape.

 Colorful Spinning Tops
We have a top similar to this. Ours has a race car and an airplane.
We also have a top that changes colors as it spins and another old fashioned metal top.
Each of our kids has enjoyed having a special top of their own.

Ramp Racer from Highlights for Children Zig Zag Tower from Hearthsong

These are fun! We have a much smaller version that only allows one car to go down the ramps at a time. My son would LOVE to get his hands on one of these.

Band in a Box
We purchased a kit just like this for my oldest two years ago and it still draws the children's attention.
I have to admit, the "band" doesn't stay put in the box. But the kids do really enjoy the items.

Capsela 660 Aqua Explorer Kit

Have you heard of Capsela? These kits are really neat!
They are motorized! I found a used set at Goodwill for $1 and brought it home to give it a try. My husband and son fell in love. So guess what was under the Christmas tree? We didn't get this exact set, but you might want to give it a try. The parts can be used to make several different creations.
