Designed to encourage kids to consume 5 fruits and vegetables a day, this website offers a parent’s guide, coloring pages, activity sheets and other resources to help you teach your child about nutrition.  The site also offers links to several additional resources (many sponsored by commercial vendors) to help encourage your kids to eat their fruits and vegetables.

At this site sponsored by the Alaska Department of Education, Division of Libraries, and includes extensive primary source materials as well as suggested activities and a teacher’ resource packet.  Select a category and explore the legacy of gold in Alaska!

Arkansas Department of Human Services Story of the Month

ADHS has archived 3 years worth of “stories of the month”  for use during the school term.  Suggested activities and story-themed pintables are provided for each selected title.  Some of the stories featured include Are You My Mother?; Silly Sally; Jump, Frog, Jump; Harry the Dirty Dog; as well as several titles that you’ll recognize if you are suing the Before Five in a Row curriculum and many other childhood favorites.

Core Knowledge Coordinator of Colorado

This website hosts a collection of units written by Colorado teachers as part of several Writing Institutes.  The lesson plans are available in printable pdf versions and cover a variety of subject areas and books.  The units are sorted by grade level and/or subject area.  Some examples of available units are studies based on Caps for Sale (Preschool) and Little Women (5th Grade).  There are also lessons for space, weather, the five senses, physical education, art, music and many more subjects.  Often the lessons include printable activity sheets or other materials for student involvement.  There are an incredible number of free lesson plans at this site so it’s well worth taking some time to look around.

At this site you’ll find links to games and puzzle with a riverboat or train theme provided by the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat website.   In addition, you can find a teacher’s guide plus lesson plans for elementary through senior high based on a tour of the Essex Steam and Train facility.  There’s also a printable activity page.  In addition, the site provides a list of links to learn more about the history of the railroad.

This link takes you to the archives of Fun Christian Homeschooling, where you can find free printable unit studies on a variety of topics.

 

Georgia Department of Education
Use the search options on the home page of this site to look for unit studies and lesson plans on a variety of topics and for a wide range of age groups.  Most of these materials are accessible without the use of a password or registration.  You may have to be creative with your search options to find exactly what you need, but there are lots of materials here.

Homeschool Share
This is a cooperative site for homeschoolers to share the unit studies that they've created. There are quite a wide range of studies available for many good books. 

 

Honey Bee

This unit study is designed for grades K-3 and teaches science, language arts and art skills.  The primary purpose of the study is to learn the body parts of the honey bee by constructing a paper honey bee model.  The lesson is sponsored by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, University of Arizona.  Additional unit studies on a wide variety of topics are available from the University of Arizona’s online publications library- just look for those that offer a PDF or HTML Version free of charge.

A free “Honey Files” Teacher’s Guide may be downloaded from this site and you may view a brief sample of the accompanying video available for purchase.  The Teacher’s Guide provides several suggested activities and worksheets that can be used independent of the video.  In addition, you can find recipes and other information about honey at this site sponsored by the National Honey Board. 

 

 

Mini Insect Unit Study
This is a 14-page pdf lesson plan for the study of insects created by Rick and Michelle Eichhron.  The lesson plan includes hands-on activities and research suggestions for the user as well as several printable pages for review and activities.

 

 

Oklahoma- A Century in the Making (Added 12/07)

This comprehensive website offers a wide array of facts about the history of Oklahoma and even an interactive “Centennial Quiz” to test your knowledge of the state.  Visitors to this site can listen to podcasts, view a slideshow or participate in a visual scavenger hunt all about the history of Oklahoma.

Provides tips for creating a hybrid lesson plan using both living books and textbooks. Most of the suggested resources are copyright free and available online.

Purdue Extension 4-H Youth Development Publications 

From this site you can download free documents with tips on Dog Obedience, Aquatic Science, Dressage techniques and other animal and life science topics.  Family, home, health and citizenship materials are available as well.  The total number of topics available is small but unique. 

 

 

Smithsonian In Your Classroom- Winning the Vote: How Americans Elect Their Presidents (added 6/08)

Via this link you can download a complete copy of 1996 Smithsonian publication on America’s election process in pdf and view additional resources online.  The document includes background information and three complete lesson plans on presidential elections. 

 

 

Teacher’s Guides for Aquatic Ecosystem Posters

These resources are sponsored by the state of Kentucky and provide printable guides for use with specialized posters.  A color image of the poster is included on the front page of the guide, making these guides suitable for home use. Some of the guides may reference evolution theory.

The American Red Cross Kid’s Page (Connecticut Chapter)

At this website you can access lesson plans, features and activities, a community center and more. Lesson are downloadable, have both teacher and student materials and can be sorted by title or topic.

 

The Old Schoolhouse Magazine Study Hall
TOS Magazine has assembled links to free unit studies, printables and lessons plans for an assortment of study areas including Bible, College Prep, History, Mathmatics, Music, Science and more. TOS does place advertisments liberally throught the page, but it's still well worth a visit. Just be careful to click on the actual lesson links rather than the larger advertisement banner surrounding them. Also, sign up for the monthy Unit Study e-Newsletter to learn about the latest freebies.

 

U.S. Mint
This site offers several downloadable lesson plans. Included lessons are "50 State Quarters", "Westward Journey Nickle Series" and other lesson plans indexed by subject area.
